Hello! It is October already, where has the time gone? I am a big fan of the fall, but let’s just say I can’t believe it came this quickly (lol).

I have begun visiting classrooms and sharing via Twitter (@mingarsan), please follow me and re-Tweet so our students can see themselves out on social media. As I attend events either at the schools or in the community, I will share them with you. My goal is to make sure D428 receives the deserved accolades from the community for the great work our staff and students are doing.

We have hired a Communications Coordinator and she started on Monday, September 26. I would like to e-introduce Ms. Rita Elliott to you all. You may have already seen a communication or two come out from her, but I wanted to make it formal via this newsletter. Rita comes to us with more than 20 years of communications, public relations, publications, marketing, social media management, and crisis communications experience, primarily in the higher education sector. She has spent the past two years as the senior director of communications at Elgin Community College and before that, served in various communications and marketing leadership positions at Rockford University. Rita will be spearheading our district communications efforts, helping us to increase our presence with our families and community. Welcome!

We welcome back Armir Doka as the Director of Business & Finance/CSBO replacement! Armir worked previously in the Business Office as the Business & Finance Manager for 3 ½ years. He is scheduled to start on October 31. The Business Office is excited to have him back at D428 and looking forward to a smooth transition for the rest of this school year!

Lots of FIRST happenings at the High School! Principal Donna Larson and the administrative team are doing some creative things with students around attendance, behavior, and school events. These efforts have made a difference in the reduction of tardies and suspensions. Students are motivated to self-monitoring themselves in order to attend athletic events and homecoming.

DHS established and implemented a point management system, 5 Star. This program allows students to earn points for participating in extracurricular events, as well as earn points for good deeds displayed around the school. For example, students can collect points for attending a volleyball game for 3 points. Students may earn points for volunteering or doing good deeds. This also allows teachers to manage point systems to be earned within their classroom. Offering points to the entire class for being on time in 1 week (just to name an example). This point system began the week of 9/12 once the IDs/systems were established, as well as the establishment of this point system program. Staff can scan student IDs for students to earn/collect these points.

The 5 Star program is already showing great promise and positive momentum. Since it’s implementation, Out of School Suspensions (OSS) have decreased by 90% in just three weeks!

Attendance Data:

DHS’ new set of hourly deans are averaging 60 meetings a week with students and families to help increase the attendance goals or identify barriers to offer more support to students. The ROE has set up meetings with families and students to take place at DHS all of next week to discuss more support and overall attendance strategies. I say keep it up!

Our DEI Director, Amonaquenette Parker, is facilitating Community Conversations to offer opportunities to share information and garner feedback on practices, policies, or other issues. Please consider attending and participating. These meetings are scheduled on the following dates: October 27, November 29, January 25, February 23, March 23, April 20, and May 8. Locations are yet to be determined, but the hours are 5 pm – 7pm.

Survey Says…Our Board of Education will be contracting with HumanEx to develop, facilitate and share out the outcomes of a survey to identify areas of improvement AND what the district is doing well. We will give you a heads up as to when it will be implemented and we would appreciate as much participation as possible. I will share the details once we have them.

The Education Center will close for repairs and renovations on Thursday, October 6, and is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2023. Additionally, the Education Center will be closed to all traffic on October 6, 7, and 10. It will reopen with limited access on October 11. Aging rooftop heating and cooling units are more than 20 years old and require replacement. Additional repairs and renovations will include redoing ductwork, replacing ceilings, replacing lights with energy efficient lighting, replacing flooring, including repair from recent flood damage, and painting.

Human Resources and Student Registration, Fees, and Records Education Center offices will be temporarily relocated to the Menta Academy, 900 E. Garden Street, DeKalb. Hours of operation will remain, Mon. – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. All other Education Center employees will be located in the NIU building at 3100 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.
