Dekalb High School (DHS) formally inducted the largest National Honors Society (NHS) chapter in the school’s history; a total of 76 students were inducted into membership of the NHS during a ceremony held on March 6, 2024, in the high school auditorium.

The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in more than 60 percent of the nation’s high schools, and since 1921, millions of students have been selected for membership. Millions of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members since 1945 by the sponsoring organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

According to NHS, students apply by submitting a written application. The applications exhibit why the student should be considered a candidate by describing their experiences. Students are considered for the NHS by maintaining above a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and demonstrating leadership, character, and service. The NHS Faculty Council then selects members for meeting these high standards. After becoming an active member, students are expected to complete more than 20 hours of community service per school year.

“This year’s class is as diverse as I have seen in my 21 years as an advisor,” said Philip Rouse, a Spanish teacher and NHS Advisor at DHS. “It matches 

our population served.”
