The start of a new school year is always a time filled with excitement, energy, and a few nerves as students and staff prepare to step back into the classroom and take on another year of learning and growth. This year in DeKalb CUSD 428, there's even more excitement, energy, and a few nerves as the new Dr. Leroy A. Elementary School plans to open its doors to more than 400 students from DeKalb's north corridor. Laying the groundwork for success is the school's first principal, Mr. Maurice McDavid, who has been working tirelessly over the past school year to ensure he and his staff or ready to welcome new students and families not only into an industry-leading educational space, but also a space grounded in community, engagement and high-expectations.

As the August opening of Dr. Leroy A. Mitchell Elementary nears, the NIU College of Education caught up with their alumnus Maurice McDavid in their May 30, 2025 article, Double-alum Maurice McDavid readies Mitchell Elementary School for launch.
In reading, you'll find a great article that takes a deep dive into the District's and McDavid's focus on the importance and impact of this historic moment for the students and families of DeKalb, as well as the entire community.
