DeKalb High School Student Completes Eagle Scout Project for Mitchell Elementary
Posted on 10/31/2025

DeKalb High School senior and Brooks/Clinton Rosette alumnus Marcos Zaylik completed his Eagle Scout project this year. Inspired by his Honors Biology teacher, Mrs. Stoll, he chose to build a monarch butterfly garden, initially intended for the biology department at DeKalb High School. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting’s highest rank, is earned by Scouts who complete a series of requirements, including earning 21 merit badges, holding leadership positions, and completing a community service project. The rank signifies a high level of dedication, leadership, and service, and is recognized nationwide. All requirements must be finished before a Scout's 18th birthday.

When it was announced that the mascot for the new Dr. Leroy A. Mitchell Elementary School would be the Monarch butterfly, Principal Maurice McDavid suggested that the garden be relocated to the grounds of the new school. Zaylik agreed, citing his belief that “both the garden and the school represent second chances.”

Mr. McDavid says the project has him thinking about how to restore and build hope and community at Mitchell. “It matches some of the work that we’re looking to do here at this school and in this community,” he said.

With the completion of his project, Zaylik follows in the footsteps of his brother, Francis, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 2021. After graduation, Zaylik hopes to continue his work in Scouts while pursuing a career in the trades, specifically HVAC.

Butterfly garden begins to growFor younger generations, Marcos Zaylik hopes that the butterfly garden can inspire them to follow through and finish whatever projects they begin. “When you get anything done, whether it be your homework, chores, or even an Eagle project,” he says, “the relief and uplifting feel you get is awesome.”
