If your family finds themselves in a transitional period where steady housing is a challenge, the McKinney-Vento Act (Homeless Act) may provide supports and protections to ensure that your child/children have a consistent education.

Assistance may include:

  • Transportation

ISBE - Homeless Education

An Illinois State Board of Education grant-funded project under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth Program. The goal of this statewide initiative is to disseminate information to Illinois schools and shelters as to the educational rights and needs of homeless children and youth.

Barb Food Mart

Barb Food Mart is a school-based food pantry serving all families with a child enrolled in DeKalb CUSD 428. 

The pantry offers online ordering with drive thru and walk up pick up options. Barb Food Mart typically has fresh, frozen and pantry staples. Hygiene and household items are offered as often as possible.

Guests can also visit the Barb Food Mart. Parking is in lot on Taylor and enter through door #9. Many of the same fresh and frozen items are available with a limited indoor shopping area.
