Join us on Oct. 17 for Community Conversations
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first Community Conversations of the year on September 25 to learn more about Mitchell Elementary and the DeKalb County School Facility Tax that will be on November’s ballot. We had a lot of good discussions, and we appreciate your time, questions, and engagement.
Our next Community Conversations event is October 17, 2024 from 5-7 p.m at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N Annie Glidden Rd, DeKalb. Dinner from Portillo’s will be served at 5 p.m., and the main agenda will begin at 6 p.m.
We will again focus on the steps being taken now to prepare Mitchell Elementary for staffing and opening for the 2025-2026 school year.
- Mitchell Construction Update
- Mitchell Mission and Vision Drafts: We will review the drafted mission and vision of Mitchell and ensure that it aligns with the district mission.
- Mitchell as a Community Hub: We will begin the discussion of how Mitchell can be used to serve as a community hub (i.e. Barb Food Mart satellite location, after school care, evening meeting space, etc).
Also as a part of our conversations for the evening, we will be available to answer questions specific to the DeKalb County School Facility Tax (CSFT) also known as the “Penny Sales Tax.”. As a reminder, the CSFT is a proposed 1% sales tax on certain goods sold within the county, designed to support school facility improvements. These funds could also be used to support School Resource Officers, and Mental Health professionals in the future. Each district in the county can decide how to utilize funds received from the tax. If passed, DeKalb CUSD 428 intends to use the proceeds to lower bond debt and provide additional property tax relief to district residents. You can learn more about the CSFT on our website.
Your support and engagement are critical to the continued success of our schools and our students. Thank you in advance for investing your time and we look forward to seeing everyone on October 17.
