What is it?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a data driven behavior intervention program. PBIS focuses on teaching positive behavior as a way to improve academic performances and school climate.
Who does it effect?
It effects all students and staff in our building. The PBIS team, made up of faculty, staff an parents made a behavior matrix this past summer. The matrix is designed to show what behaviors should look like in all locations in the building. The behavior expectations are posted around the school in large orange posters including one in every classroom.
Behavior Matrix
What are the expectations?
The committee came up with a simple acronym to help students remember are specific guidelines here at HMS.
S - Safety First
A - Act Respectfully
M - Make Responsible Choices
What happens when students meet these expectations?
Teachers and staff issue students SAM tickets throughout the day when they are displaying appropriate school behaviors. Students are then able to put their ticket in a box in front of the main office to be included in the weekly drawing. Weekly drawings are usually food or movie tickets. Students can also choose to put their tickets in a quarterly drawing for J-Barb wear, semester drawing for $50.00 cash or an end of the year drawing for an ipod. In addition to SAM tickets, there will also be other incentives throughout the year.
