Cortland Elementary School and PTA Lend A Helping Hand

The Cortland Elementary School is in it’s 10th year of providing winter food baskets to Cortland families who need a helping hand. When the program began it served 5 baskets. This year they are at 66 baskets for families. Susan Bivens, the Multiple Handicap coordinator at Cortland, and the Cortland Methodist Church team up to put together the makings of a holiday meal for each of the families. The Church provides either a ham or turkey while each classrooom adds the rest of the meal. Items that go into the baskets include stuffing, dessert mix, canned fruit, cranberries, potatoes, gravy, and more. Once the items are collected, Susan’s class packs each basket. Thank you to all of the students, staff and families who donated items this year to help our neighbors have a happy holiday!

While the school collects food for baskets, the Cortland PTA wanted to lend a helping hand as well. This year, all families who attended the Breakfast with Santa fundraiser were encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food pantry. There was an overwhelming response of generosity from the community. The PTA was able to donate about 100 pounds of food to the food pantry. Thank you to all who supported the cause and for making the Breakfast with Santa fundraiser the biggest and best it has ever been!

A letter from Principal Lyle:

Dear Cortland Families,

We wanted to thank you for attending your student’s Fall Conference. We had a wonderful turn out!

We wanted to share that the new school is underway. The walls are being built as I write. The students are currently voting on three playground options over the next week.

Please continue to check our website for updates on construction and school events.

The referendum in 2008 is the first phase of a ten year Master Facilities plan. A second phase that will bring program and facility equity to the remaining district schools will likely be proposed around 2012.
