Students at Chesebro School Accurately Predict Victory for the Presidential Election
On Tuesday, November 4 th as the nation was out voting for the presidential election, students at Chesebro School were studying about each of the presidents, how the electoral college works, the percentage of voters who have turned out for past elections - - and casting their own presidential vote.
In Grades K-5, students went to the Chesebro Polls and cast a primary or intermediate ballot with their classroom. Then, the ballot official from Mr. LaPlante’s 4 th and 5 th grade class counted the ballots and Javier Castro from this class, made an announcement over the intercom. 187 students predicted the victory of Barack Obama as the nation’s new leader. As the announcement was made, cheering from all the rooms could be heard in the office. Students were told that this vote was a prediction, and that they should follow the real election to view the actual outcome.

The Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) has announced that six schools in DeKalb Community Unit District 428 have qualified for state recognition for 2007, based on student achievement at the schools over the past three years. Chesebro and Littlejohn Elementary Schools have been named Spotlight Schools for the second consecutive year. Tyler Elementary was named as a Spotlight School for the first time this year. Malta and Jefferson Elementary Schools were named as Academic Improvement Schools. Clinton Rosette Middle School was also named as an Academic Improvement School. Huntley Middle School was named as an Academic Improvement School last year, and Lincoln Elementary School joined a select group of schools as an Academic Excellence School last year.
In order to qualify as a Spotlight School, four criteria must be met. "Chesebro is pleased to receive this award that reflects the dedication, teamwork, and professionalism of our entire staff", said Chesebro principal, Sharon Giless.
"We are very excited to receive this award for the second consecutive year," she added. “This type of comprehensive improvement and the resulting recognition, does not happen by accident”, according to Superintendent of Schools, Paul Beilfuss. “A prolonged, consistent, and collaborative relationship among our classroom teachers, other professional and classified staff, working together over a period of years with district administrators in partnership with parents, guardians, families, and the community, brings about positive results. We will strive for continued academic excellence as we work to attain additional capacity for the growth occurring in our district”.
