First Grade

During our nature unit the students looked at paintings of flowers by Georgia O’Keeffe. They were able to talk about her work using the ABCs of art. They discovered the repetition and variety in nature. The students used what they had learned to create big, beautiful flowers of their own creation. They also learned about invisible lines and some basic techniques of painting

Second Grade

During our nature unit the students discovered the design in nature and art. They found the two guiding principles of repetition and variety. We looked at paintings of leaves by Georgia O’Keeffe and noticed that artists use the same principles as well. The students created a nature study of leaves by tracing real leaves and then drawing the structure of the veins by observation. We can learn about the world around us through the close observation in drawing. They drew with oil pastel and painted with watercolor, using new blending techniques.

Third Grade

During our nature unit the students looked for design principles in the natural world. They viewed paintings of nature by Audubon, O’Keeffe, and Cezanne. The students then selected a subject of their choice and created a detailed study. They drew with oil pastel and painted with watercolor, using blending and shading techniques. Artists can appreciate and learn about the world around them through art!
