First Grade
During our architecture unit, students viewed examples of houses from DeKalb. We talked about architects and the art of designing buildings. They looked for the basic shapes that appear in most architecture and the way they are repeated. Becoming an architect for the day, they cut and arranged shapes on a paper bag adding patterns and textures where appropriate. In the end, they stuffed them with paper and glued on a roof. They created a whole village!
Second Grade
During our architecture unit, students viewed examples of architecture from DeKalb. They were introduced to a very famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright and looked at many examples of his work. We searched for the repetition, variety, and overlapping of shapes used in the designs. Students then created their own designs using the method of collage.
Third Grade
During our architecture unit, students viewed examples of local architecture and noticed the art elements that were repeated in the design of these structures. They also looked at paintings by Edward Hopper that portray the architecture of his time. Students selected photos of local architecture and rendered pencil drawings, paying close attention to repetition, variety, and overlapping.
