Nearly 300 individuals who have made exemplary contributions to public and private schools in Illinois are honored by the State Board of Education during the annual Those Who Excel/Illinois Teacher of the Year awards program.

Four levels of awards in six categories are presented by the State Superintendent of Illinois.  The six categories include: Classroom Teacher, School Administrator/Principal, Student Support Personnel, Educational Service Personnel, and School Board Member/Community Volunteer, and the newest category, Teams. The State Board annually bestows three levels of recognition at its awards banquet:  the Award of Excellence, the top honor, the Award of Meritorious Service and the Award of Special Recognition.  A fourth level, Certificate of Appreciation is mailed to the district for a local presentation.

"The education of our children is a team effort.  An extraordinary commitment to children and learning must be demonstrated by all team members.  This awards program was established to honor these partners in education - from principals to parents and board presidents to bus drivers - for their hard work and dedication on behalf of our high quality schools.  They truly deserve our admiration and thanks for their hard work"--State Superintendent Joseph Spagnola

Selection of Those Who Excel award winners is made by a committee of their peers who represent statewide education organizations and former winners.
